High Tails is thrilled to be offering one on one Barn Hunt lessons with the talented Monika Hoyer!
Barn Hunt is a quickly growing dog sport that is based on the traditional role of dogs who rid farms, barns, storage areas and homes of vermin. Some dog breeds were specifically created for this role however dogs of all breeds, ages and abilities can excel in this fun filled sport!
One of the most important parts of Barn Hunt is the gerbils we use in our lessons. Our gerbils are owned, trained and cared for by Monika herself and their care is strictly regulated by the Barn Hunt Association. Gerbils are an integral part of the sport and ensuring their comfort and safety is the utmost importance! Monika’s gerbils are so well trained their will eagerly jump into their safe, comfortable aerated tubs and enjoy interactions with the dogs.
Dogs who both have a high prey drive and a low prey drive can excel at this sport! Dogs with a high prey drive can be taught to focus their energy and how to respond to their handler once they’ve found the gerbil. Dogs with lower prey drives can be taught to scent detect just like in Nose Work where they may find the scent of pine. It’s so fun to watch all the different ways dogs and handlers can play this sport.
Your one on one lessons with Monika will be tailored to meet the needs of your dog. Skills that can be worked on and developed include identifying the gerbil correctly, backing off once the dog has indicated they have found the gerbil, search techniques including searching low to high on the bales, how to navigate the tunnel and ramp aspect of Barn Hunt and how to find more than 1 gerbil on a search. The possibilities are endless!
I would be interested in trying the Barn Hunt. please provide me the fee and dates.
Thank you

Will these be good for an elkhound who is a scent hound. His nose rules him and it’s hard to break his focus once he’s on to something or has found something. It’s really frustrating when on walks and there are rabbits around
