It’s a pretty exciting time when a new puppy is added to a family. For some families this is their second dog. We always have dreams that our current dog will be thrilled to have a new best friend to hang out and play with however just like kids sometimes they aren’t always excited about a new “baby”.
Older dogs may have issues with the new arrival for a variety of reasons:
- They may be senior and just don’t have the energy for a new puppy
- They may have a health concern that makes the puppy frustrating or scary to them
- They may feel protective over their space and belongings including the humans
- They may dislike other dogs and not enjoy play
- They may feel overwhelmed by the change in the family dynamic
Whatever the reason may be there’s some key things you can do to help your new puppy and older dog develop a healthy and safe relationship.
#1 Don’t expect the dogs to work it out amongst themselves. This will stress your older dog out and put them in an unfair position where they may have to escalate to biting or fighting with a puppy. This is detrimental to both dogs and will not create a long term harmonious relationship.
#2 Give your older dog a safe space to be away from the puppy. This space should include water, a soft bed, toys and a place to eat. The older dog should get regular breaks away from the puppy and that includes one on one time with the family.
#3 Take your new puppy for on leash walks with the older dog. This will allow them to bond but will keep the puppy from climbing on, biting and generally annoying the older dog.
#4 Teach your puppy obedience skills like leave it and coming when called so you can start to ask your puppy to not bother the older dog. A great place to learn obedience skills and appropriate dog play would be in puppy class.
#5 If you suspect your older dog has a health concern that is being aggravated by the new puppy ensure you visit your veterinarian.
