We run a pretty big risk when we put a collar on a pet and yet people leave them on their pets all the time. That risk is increased when an animal is kept in an enclosed space like a crate or dog run. If your pet becomes caught up, then they may injure themselves or worse.

One of the policies we have in place at High Tails is that all pets (dogs, cats, bunnies, etc.) are “naked” during their stay. We remove all collars and harnesses. This will help keep your best friend safe! When pets are going home we will put them back on so they aren’t left behind.

At home it’s good practice to remove a collar and/or harness whenever your pet is alone. Certain collars should be removed during play time even when supervised as they can become caught on another animal. Take some time to evaluate your pet’s gear and consider the outcome of being caught on a leg, jaw or a fence. If you’re uncertain about being able to remove it then consider taking it off.

Alternative options include breakaway collars as well as micro-chipping your pet for identifying purposes (should your pet ever go missing).  Ensure all collars and harnesses are fitted correctly. Most only require two fingers to fit through a strap. Loose equipment increases the risk substantially and has the added danger of chaffing as well.

Keep your pet safe and check your equipment before they play or are left alone!
